Let me ask you this: who do you want to be?
If you’re like most people, then chances are you don’t have an answer. In fact, most people never even asked themselves this question, and live their life unconsciously without never trying to find what fulfills them. Unfortunately, there’s no way you can be fulfilled if you don’t even know who you want to be.
I believe that life is a journey in which we are all trying to figure out who we truly are, and what are the abilites that make us more special than anybody else. Knowing exactly what kind of person you want to be does not have to be difficult. It’s just about asking yourself the right questions.
Who do you truly want to be? In this article, I’ll share with you 5 ways that you can find out the kind of person you want to become.
1 – What Are Your Values?
The first question to ask yourself is: ”What do I value most in my life?”
We all have different values that we value differently: you must find yours in order to find out who you would like to be.
Values are any thoughts regarding standards of behavior that you have and consider to be of utmost importance. It is something that you view as so important that you would love the whole world to share the same values as you.
Typically, values are things such as: honesty, playfulness, freedom, love, hard-working… anything that you can think of.
Write down a list of your most treasured values. Usually, you can quickly come up with a few of them. If you can’t think of any, just look back on your past and analyze each situations that made you either happy, sad, unhappy or angry. Oftentimes, your values dictate on a subconscious level how you are going to interpret a situation.
Once you find your core values, which is what has been controlling your behavior all along, you should start getting a better picture of who you want to be, what kind of person you are, where and how you want to live.
I have been lucky as I discovered one of my most treasured value when I was about 15, which is the value of respect. This has since shaped my whole future and the reason why I’m passionately interested in the japanese culture.
Values are one of the most important things when it comes to finding out who you really are and who you really want to spend time with.
2 – Who Do You Want Not To Be?
If you don’t know who you want to be, then at least you must know what kind of person you don’t want to become. We all have types of people we like less than others: good! That’s a great start.
Write down anything that repels you, that disguts you, and that you’d rather die than having to embody one of these traits. By writing enough of ”who you don’t want to be”, you’ll start understanding who you want to be.
For instance, I would personnally would never want to become negative, disrespectful, have to work for somebody else other than myself, to impact only a few people, etc..
From what I’ve written only, you should be able to see yourself what kind of person I’m striving to be. Try that yourself!
3 – What Stimulates You In Life?
No matter where you live and who you are, we all have things that stimulate us. Your mission, if you accept it, is to write down everything that arouse passion in you.
If you tell me nothing stimulates you, that’s fine too. First, make sure that nothing does stimulate you, then be aware of the nuance: you not having found what stimulats you does not mean that nothing in this world will stimulate you.
In this case, the solution is simple: try many different things. That’s it, and as simple as it may sound, it’s the only way to find out. When you try something new, your brain will either tell you: ”I love this”, ”It’s kinda cool” or ”Gosh, I hated this.”
Obviously, you want to try as much things as possible until you figure out what your brain associates to ”I love this!”.
Knowing what stimulates you in your life will allow you to create a vision around what you want to do with your life: it’s an extremely important step, as if you don’t plan out your life, somebody else will plan it for you.
There are two things that primarily stimulates me in life: love, and self-development. Once again, you should start understanding my ”personnage” a little bit more just by reading my answers.
4 – Who Do You Look Up To?
Although I don’t know who you want to be, there’s one thing I’m sure of: somebody else is already living that life.
Your mission this time, is to find that person. I’m not talking about taking a 25-years trip in Egypt in an attempt to find the only person in the world that will inspire you, no. I’m talking about looking for celebreties, figure of authorities in the world that you can look up on internet or in books.
There are so many people living so many different lives that it’s not possible not to find someone that will inspire you. Once you find that someone, guess what: you just found out who you want to be!
These are the 4 ways that you can use to discover your true self. Tell me: who do you want to be? Tell me in the comment section below, I’d love to hear what you have to say!
