‘’What am I doing with my life?’’ is a question quite a lot of people find themselves asking in their lifetime.

Society has conditioned most people to behave in a certain way, which is why so many people feel stuck in their lives.

For instance, studies have shown that a staggering 70% of Americans literally hate their job!

Some people somehow deal with it and keep struggling their whole lives, before leaving this world full of regrets. What about you? Are you planning on settling for a mediocre life?

If you’re reading this, I assume that you’ve had enough of this farce and that you want to claim what is your birthright: happiness and fulfillment. Unfortunately, most people never experience true happiness in their lifetime. Instead, they let themselves be caught up by life’s hardships and comfort themselves by indulging in what brings the most instant-gratification (junk food, cigarettes, drugs.. to name a few).

Although this might give them some short-term pleasure, this never leads to long-term happiness and fulfillment. Are you ready to learn how to answer the question ‘’what am I doing with my life’’?

The Journey Is Not The Destination

When you feel like nothing’s working and that you’re at the end of your rope, I know how difficult it is to believe that there is still light at the end of the tunnel. Conversely, I know how easy it is to throw in the towel and resign to what we think is our fate.

However, before we dive into the actual content and what steps you can take to turn your life around, your mindset needs to be addressed. After all, whether you are going to apply the information or not will be based on your beliefs.

First, you must realize that your current situation is only temporary. Your life is not over, as long as you keep going and make the decision that you are going to act on what you read.

As Napoleon Hill once said in his book ”Think And Grow Rich”,

Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action, and directed to a definite end.

If you find yourself having some trouble believing that you can change, please go through the following process to get rid of your limiting belief:

  • STEP 1: Identify Your Limiting Belief

The first step towards change is awareness. Recognize that you have a limiting belief around it being the end whereas it’s not necessarily the truth.

Then, it’s time to ask yourself if this belief you have is really true. Most of the time, we don’t have all the information and we draw conclusions way too rapidly.

  • STEP 2 : Associate Massive Pain To This Belief

Next, you want to make sure that you never want to believe this ever again. To that end, you must get leverage on yourself by linking pain to whatever you don’t want anymore in your life. The best way to do this is to use pain-inducing questions!

Here are some examples of such questions:

  1. What’s the consequences of believing this?
  2. How is that going to impact your life?
  3. Why does it have a negative influence on your life?

By the way, I find this technique to be incredibly valuable in every aspect of life. You can literally get yourself to be motivated to do virtually anything.

  • STEP 3: Associate Pleasure To Changing

In the same way, now is the time to associate massive pleasure to the new belief you want to have.

Again, you might want to use pleasure-inducing questions such as:

  1. If I didn’t take this belief on, how would my life change?
  2. How would I feel?
  3. How would I experience life?

Congratulations! You have now the ability to turn any negative limiting belief into an empowering one! I would recommend you block out some time to go through this process that I believe is very important.

Now that you are ready, let’s see how you can get the most of these strategies!

Put Yourself In A Peak State!

One of the many strategies I’ve learned to maximize the efficiency of my learning and retain information better is to put myself in a great state.

Think about it, how can you expect to remember anything if you’re feeling depressed and exhausted?

The fact of the matter is that what you learn gets associated to the state you’re in. Do you want to associate my life-changing advices with boredom and sleepiness? I hope not!

What I’ve learned to be the best state you could ever be in when wanting to learn anything new is to put yourself in the state of being a kid. The reason is that kids are the best learners on the planet: they are open-minded, wiling to participate and always make things fun.

More importantly, they have no boundaries. Ask children what they want to do with their lives and they will tell you the craziest things. If you had asked me this question as a kid, I would probably have said: ‘’I want to become Spider-Man!’’ and would have totally believed it.

Now, before you read on.. get up and start doing something! Whether it be yelling or dancing like crazy, change your physiology and get excited!

There are actually a few techniques to put oneself in a great state, but long story short, engage your body in an empowering, congruent way.

If you’d like more options, here are a list of things you could do to wake your body up:

  • Dance
  • Jump up-and-down
  • Breathe rapidly
  • Scream (tell your neighbors that you’re not being murdered beforehand, by the way)
  • Shake your body

Anything is good as long as it shakes off any disempowering feeling such as boredom, sadness or laziness, but I do recommend that you put yourself in an even better state and don’t settle for the ‘neutral’ state.

Now that you are fully equipped, let’s circle back and answer the question: ‘’What Am I Doing With My Life?’’

1/ Find Your Values, Find Your Life

The first thing you got to do in order to find your path is to uncover your values beforehand. Values are what drive us, and make us do what we do and the choices we make. Unless you’re consistent with your values which is what makes up your identity, you won’t feel like your life is going anywhere.

It’s important to note that, however, everyone is different. For example, my values might be different than yours, and they probably are.

When it comes to values, there is no right or wrong. It’s just proper to each.

One of the best way I know to uncover values is to ask the right questions, and the answers will give you hints as to what you value most in life. Here are some questions you could ask yourself (remember, be like a kid – no restrictions whatsoever.):

  • ‘’What would I do if I had all the money in the world?’’
  • ‘’If I could turn one (crazy) thought into reality, what would it be?’’
  • ‘’What is an emotion or feeling I want to experience more in my life?’’

By the way, can our values change throughout our lives? Of course, they can! This is why some people drastically change after going through some experiences – whether it be in a good way, or a bad way.

In my case, I recently decided to value happiness much more than I used to, which is a very powerful technique that I talk about in this article. Long story short, I made the decision that I would value happiness at a much higher level which made it easier for me to feel happy.

2/ What Is Your Purpose?

Again, this is something you want to find out as soon as possible as this is going to determine the direction of your life. Not only that, but it is also going to be the fuel that is going to drive you every single day of your life.

I highly recommend that you go through the previous exercise before trying to tackle this question. The answers you came up with might radically change your answer.

If anything was possible, what would be a life that would excite you and pull you to move towards? Some people – such as myself – might have a very simplistic vision, which might consist of positively impacting millions of people’s lives as they happily live around the people they love most.

On the other hand, others might want something totally different and outrageous with their lives – but this is fine. Once again, there is no right or wrong. Find what your driving force is.

3/ Set Goals To Learn More About Yourself

Do you have some ideas regarding what you would want your life to be like? Start taking action right now!

Set some new, empowering goal that is going to motivate you.

What if you want to play the guitar and two weeks later you realize that’s not so much exciting anymore? That’s fine, just go back and set another goal. You might even want to set multiple goals at the same time.

I’m not so fond of the sniper approach – after all, it requires a lot of effort, time and energy to be able to aim precisely your target. Even so, you might end up realizing you’re aiming at the wrong target! On the other hand, I like the shotgun approach: just fire as much as you can until it hits.

Start brainstorming right now some ideas of things you could enjoy doing, no matter what that is and take massive action! If you find yourself a passion, great! If not, that’s fine too. Just move on.

4/ Fail More To Understand Yourself More!

Often times, when people hear the word ‘’fail’’, they feel uncomfortable. The truth is that most people have a negative connotation with this word as they associate failure with pain.

However, failure is in fact a good thing. It’s a sign of growth. In this case, failure is even more useful.

The reason you must fail more in order to find out what you’ve been put in this planet for is because you need to try more things! If you don’t know what you are doing with your life, then chances are you didn’t try enough things.

Have you tried pursuing different paths, different passions, lifestyles? This is a very important part of this process, so don’t neglect it.

More importantly, have the right mindset around failure: the more you fail, the more you narrow down your list and the closer you get to finding what you really want your life to be about!

5/ Follow Your Gut

No matter what stage of your life you’re at, there will always be naysayers, people holding you back and trying to control your life. Are you in that situation?

Unfortunately, a lot of people get caught up in listening to – most often their family’s – everyone’s desires but their own. In doing so, what you are really doing is not making yourself happy and fulfilled, but the people around you.

If you’ve been forced your whole life to follow a path you don’t have any interest in in the first place, then there will inevitably be a burnout – which might lead you to ask yourself ‘’what am I doing with my life?’’.

I always like to say that we human beings are not logical creatures, but rather emotional ones. Although logic is what we ‘’should do’’, it’s often not what is going to fulfill us.

Following our gut instinct instead of logic sure is scary, but the reward is often 10x better than what we could have imagined.

6/ Find Your Strengths And Weaknesses

I believe that we all have been given a gift. For some people, this gift is related to singing, or dancing. In other people’s cases, it might be acting or writing. No matter what that is for you, you’ve got to find it out.

Focusing on your strengths might be the best way to get to where you want to go.

During your self-discovery journey, if you don’t already know them, you’ll also eventually find your weaknesses. These are also very important to know: maybe you shouldn’t spend as much time working on it.

In order to find what you’re good at and what you’re bad at, you have a few options:

  • Ask the people around you, they might have a different perspective than you.
  • Ask yourself by reflecting on your own past experiences, and try to extract as much value as you can from it.
  • Take massive action, and you’ll gradually get to know yourself better.

7/ Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being more present instead of living in the past, or the future. It has some great benefits, such as making you experience higher levels of happiness, increased productivity and much more, but did you know that it also could help you unravel your path?

By being more alerted in the present moment, you can take a step back and look at your life from a different perspective.

Notice how your body changes, how your environment evolves.. It might give you new insights as to what you really want to do with your life.

8/ Shift Your Beliefs, Shift Your Life

Now that you know how to turn any disempowering, negative limiting belief into an empowering equivalent, it’s time to take more action!

What are some of the beliefs that are holding you back in your life?

Most of the time, we operate on autopilot and aren’t conscious of the inner beliefs that are controlling us. However, whether you are conscious of it or not, it’s still working!

Your goal is to first track down the limiting beliefs that might prevent you from getting the life that you want. Then, use the tools I’ve previously shared with you.

9/ Take Care Of Yourself First

One common mistake that I see a lot of people make is that they don’t take care of themselves first thing in the morning. By doing so, they instantly get reactive to literally anything that happens in their lives.

I’m a huge believer in morning rituals, as I believe that what we do on a daily-basis is what defines us.

The benefit of a morning ritual is that it takes care of the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of your life which has the effect of putting you in a peak state. Each time I do my morning ritual, I feel strong, energized and motivated to take on the day.

Your morning ritual can consist of just about anything, as long as it empowers you.

When it comes to morning ritual, there is no ‘’perfect’’ routine as it greatly depends on the individual. For instance, I am a huge advocate of affirmations, dancing and singing as it put me in an incredible state. For all that, it doesn’t mean that you should do the same as what works for me doesn’t necessarily works for you.

Again, it’s time for you to take massive action and see what works best in your life!

10/ Talk To Someone You Trust

The keyword here is ‘’trust’’. Do NOT talk to somebody whose life is miserable and whose advice will probably be even more miserable. In the same way, do not talk to somebody who is too involved in your life.

I’m emphasizing this as it can be tempting to talk to family members, who often might just tell you something that they want you to do, instead of giving you a real advice.

Talk about your current situation and see where it goes from here. You may get some real insights.

Be careful not to ask too many advices from different people. The worst thing that could happen is to get yourself confused by getting too many conflicting advices. Pick one or two people you like and trust, at best.

11/ Develop A Skill To Get To Know Yourself

If you want more options in your life, you need to try more things. Specifically, dive deep into one or two skills you would like to become a master at.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to commit for the next 10 years. Just pick a skill you have an interest for, and start developing it.

As you craft your skill and spend time developing it, you might end up realizing it’s not for you and that’s okay. Remember, we’re not about the sniper approach here. You have all the time you want to figure it out. Until then, keep taking action in your life and see where it brings you.

12/ Commit To Learning And Discovering Yourself

Growth is the essence of life; it’s what makes us feel alive. That’s why I believe we should all commit to life-long learning. Unfortunately, most people stop learning after they graduate as if they had it all figured out.

The fact of the matter is that the more you learn and the more options you will have, which will tremendously benefit your life.

Instead of committing yourself based on your limited choices available, why wouldn’t you broaden your perspective and allow yourself to make a better decision?

As long as you keep growing every single day, there is no reason why you wouldn’t be able to figure out what you’re doing with your life. Whether it be reading books or investing in training programs, never cease to learn.

13/ Keep Away From Unsupportive People

I’m always reminded of a study conducted by Bar-IIan University, which states that many people have a hard time distancing themselves from toxic family members and co-workers.

‘’These are people with whom our lives are so complexly inter-twined. Many are close family whom we need and even love; others we just can’t escape. Social norms do not allow us to simply walk away from them, however much this might be tempting to do sometimes.’’, Dr. Offer says.

As difficult as it might be to cut them out of your life, unsupportive people will never have any positive impact on your life. If any, they will only make it worse.

Surround yourself with people that are going to do their very best to support you.

14/ Travel

I could never emphasize enough the benefits of traveling. First, it allows you to escape from your usual day-to-day life. Then, it gives you the ability to recharge yourself – which is especially beneficial if you’re having a hard time keeping away from unsupportive people.

Overall, it gives you a new perspective. What I love about traveling is that it gives me a new environment, new habits and new ways of looking at things. As a result, I know better what I do and don’t want in my life.

If you feel stuck in your life, then it’s time to travel and experience new things!

15/ Socialize

This technique is especially powerful if you combine it with the above-mentioned one.

As I said many times, your primary goal right now should be to try as many things as you can. What better strategy would there be than to expend your network and connect with more people?

Discussing with other people might give you great insights and new fresh perspectives about your life.

Who knows, you might meet one person who will change your life forever.

I’m always reminded of a quote from Professor Brand in ‘’Interstellar’’ movie which I find incredibly wise: ‘’It only needs to work once, Murph.’’

No matter how long it takes and how difficult it is, you just need to meet the right person once.

16/ Go Back To The Fundamentals

I’ve learned that what top athletes do when they have their back against the wall is to simply go back to the fundamentals instead of looking for a new, outrageously complex strategy.

Sometimes, we just lose what we thought we had mastered. During those times, the best thing to do is not to beat yourself up or trying to find another approach, but just to go back to the basics.

What used to make you feel alive? What changed? When did it change? Why? Ask yourself these questions.

17/ Be More Curious

There is no use in trying a lot of things if you aren’t curious about what you’re doing.

Ask yourself questions, think about it so that it becomes more appealing and interesting. Genuinely show an interest in whatever you’re pursuing.

Again, it only needs to work once. Anything could literally transform your life forever. Be prepared for it, get excited.

18/ Be Grateful

Gratefulness is one of the most empowering, resourceful and powerful state you could ever be in. It offers you new ways to look at things and improve your condition.

If you don’t know what you are doing with your life, be grateful. It will simply your life a lot more and will broaden your perspective.

Entering a grateful state isn’t difficult, it just requires some concentration. Simply ask yourself and focus on areas of your life you could be grateful for. It can be as simple as being grateful for being alive.

I find that being in the right state of mind is very important when it comes to finding what you are doing with your life.

19/ Find Models

A great way of gaining lots of insights instantly is to simply look at other people’s lives.

Specifically, finding mentors or models. You don’t have to come up with the answers yourself, you can just look at other people’s lives and assess whether or not you’d want to live the same life as them.

Having someone you can look up to is incredibly beneficial and is the fastest way to reach success in any area of your life – whether it be your finances, business, health, relationships or anything else.

Did You Find Out What You Are Doing With Your Life?

Discovering what you’re doing with your life doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, you can even make it fun (remember about what I said about being a kid?) using the tools I’ve provided you.

Shaping our beliefs, passions, and identity takes time and is a life-long journey, but anything could change for you at any moment so look forward to it.
