Today I’d like to write a different kind of article -a review. “Think and Grow Rich” was actually my very first book about self-development, and I found it so fascinating that I had to write something about it. Napoleon Hill showed us his best techniques to encounter sucess; although he does not teach actual techniques such as investing, he does teach everything behind the scenes which is most commonly referred to as “mindset”. The main idea discussed in this book is that of a burning desire -do you desire something so much that you’re willing to put everything on it? He narreted the story of a man who was willing to work with Thomas Edison. To do so, he burned all bridges behind him so he had no path of retreat and went straight on! According to the author, you can’t be successful by wishing. In order to be successful, one must never admit defeat and being obsessed by their desire. I’ll take a bit of content from the book to share it with you, below are the sixth steps one must follow to bring riches.
Desire is the first step towards riches
To back up his claim, he shares with us another story of some man during the gold-rush days who, after hard weeks of labor, finally found something but eventually decided to quit seeing that there was nothing more to discover. He then sold the machinery he had bought to a junk man. Thinking that there may have something to do, he called in a mining engineer to look at the mine. Then, the engineer taught him that in fact, the project had failed because the owner was not familiar with “fault lines”. In the end, his calculations were proven correct since the gold was found three feet further away. Had he had more persistence, the first man would have known riches, but he decided to quit earlier. Napoleon clearly believes in the principle of auto-suggestion, and as such, gives us a lot of practical informations to develop the right mindset needed for success.
Faith is the second step towards riches
Not only desiring is important, believing is as much important, he says. To believe in something, one must surround himself with what he wishes to have faith in; which I totally agree with. He regards faith as one of the most powerful positive emotion.
Auto-Suggestion is the third step towards riches
Auto-suggestion is a way to manipulate your mindset by filtering what you give it. In other words, by repeating something over and over while putting emotions into it, you can make a lie a truth. This is a very effective way to make yourself believe in something. By constantly saying something, you finally swallow it. It is just like everything else in life, if you tell a child that Santa Claus doesn’t exist over and over, he will believe it without questioning it.
Specialized Knowledge is the fourth step towards riches
You don’t need to know everything, you can just focus on one specific skill that will be the core of your business and that you will learn, and hire people that will help you make up for the things you don’t know. That is the true essence of a man of education. Knowledge alone is not power, it is only partial power; if you can organize your knowledge into definite plans, then you can turn it into complete power.
During the world war, being refered to as “an ignorant pacifist”, Henry Ford brought a Chigago newspaper to court. During the trial, the attorneys placed Mr. Ford on the witness stand to prove the jury that he was indeed an ignorant. Henry Ford was asked a lot of of questions, which he didn’t necessarily know the answer of. In the end, he became tired of this farce and, after pointing his finger at the lawyer, said: “If I should really want to answer the foolish question you have just asked, or any of the other questions you have been asking me, let me remind you that I have a row of electric push-buttons on my desk, and by pushing the right button, I can summon to my aid men who can answer ANY question I desire to ask concerning the business to which I am devoting most of my efforts. Now, will you kindly tell me, WHY I should clutter up my mind with general knowledge, for the purpose of being able to answer questions, when I have men around me who can supply any knowledge I require?”
The place then fell silent. Yes, everyone realized that this was not the answer of an ignorant man, but that of a man of education.
Imagination is the fifth step towards riches
Man’s only limitation is imagination. You need to differentiate two kinds of imagination: the first one is called “synthetic imagination” which is roughly arranging old and existing concepts or ideas into new combinations. The second one is called “creative imagination” which is what we all know -creating something from nothing. The synthetic imagination is the one which you will use the most frequently to transform desire into its monetary equivalent.
Organized planning is the sixth step towards riches
Now is the time to put desires into action. You need to be absolutely sure that your plans are sound. You must be willing to cooperate with other people, as human beings are not made to do everything all by themselves. Do not give up and if your plan doesn’t work, start all over again until your plan does work. Temporary defeat is not permanent failure.
Of course, the book goes a lot deeper than that, this was only a small and shortened fraction of the book. “Think and Grow Rich” is a very good and enjoyable book – we could call it a classic. This is a must-read for every person who aspires to become an entrepreneur. Majority of wealthy entrepreneur are in agreement with the fact that the most important thing is not the mechanics (which is 20% of success) but the mindset (80%). How could you become wealthy without the mindset of rich people? Napoleon Hill will brillantly teach you every behind-the-scenes aspects of a wealth man and will give you all the tools necessary to becoming wealthy. Are you interested in reading the book? A very powerful poem from the book to end:
“If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don’t
If you like to win, but you think you can’t,
It is almost certain you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost
For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow’s will-
It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are,
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon or late the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can!”
