What is the first thing you do every morning? For most people, the answer is checking their phone – emails, facebook/instagram feeds or drinking a cup of coffee in a hurry before heading to work. I know that was true for myself.

But this seemingly innocent behaviour is in fact unhealthy and can have severe consequences on your life.

This Habit Is Killing You According To Science

Studies have shown that not taking care of yourself first thing in the morning can have negative effects on both your physical and emotional well-being.

As obvious as this may sounds, most people don’t even spend as little as a few minutes per day to take care of themselves! And contrary to popular belief, taking care of yourself doesn’t mean relaxing in front of the TV eating a good meal.

I’m always reminded of the oxygen mask that everybody who has board a plane knows about. In case of a crash, the flight attendant always remind us of putting on the mask on ourselves first, before trying to assist children or other passengers.

Why? Because by taking care of ourselves first, we get in a position where we can assist others. Surely, you wouldn’t be of much help if you died due to lack of oxygen.

In other words, taking care of yourself first is a necessity if you want to be able to better contribute to your peers. No one will benefit from you being on low energy.

How To Get Rid Of That Habit

Taking care of yourself is pretty easy. In fact, it doesn’t even require much time. All it calls for is your active participation at least 10-15 minutes every morning.

Let me introduce you to a concept that changed my life: morning rituals.

A morning ritual is a set of actions that you do every morning to put yourself in a great state which will in turn allow you to get the most of your day. What you do can vary from exercising, to affirmations, to reading, to yoga, to meditation, etc..

What To Do If You Don’t Have Time?

According to a poll, people don’t value self-care because 44 percent of them believe that they don’t have enough time. You might be one of them.

When it comes to not having enough time, another component to consider is that we all have time for whatever is important and urgent enough.

Wouldn’t you suddenly have time if you got a call from the hospital informing you that your spouse and children are on the brink of death?

Let’s circle back to the airplane example. What would you do? Try to help your children and die because of the lack of oxygen which will also kill your children – or helping yourself first so that you can take care of your children?

My own morning ritual lasts between 1 hour to 3 hours depending on the day. But you don’t need to go that far. 15 minutes will do. Couldn’t you wake up at least 15 minutes earlier in order to make your life better? Of course you could.

Do THIS Instead To Live Happy And Longer

No need to make it more complicated than it is. Just take some time to focus on and appreciate the good in your life. Matthieu Ricard, the happiest man in the world, said it best: ‘’Think happy thoughts for 10 to 15 minutes a day.’’

The fact of the matter is that the state you’re in at any moment in time will dictate the results you’ll get from the actions you take. Simply said, being happy will both benefit you and others.

Focus is our greatest weapons as human beings. This is the force that can make us feel incredibly happy or miserable. Lucky us, we have full control over it!

Ask yourself questions that will elicit positive answers, such as ‘’Who do I love?’’, ‘’Who loves me?’’, ‘’What am I grateful for?’’, ‘’What is my passion in life?’’, etc.. Even remembering past, pleasant experiences will do.

CONCLUSION

Can you imagine how different your life would be if you just took an extra 15 minutes out of your day to think happy thoughts?

Not only would it transform your life, but the lives of the people around you as well! Taking care of yourself is a priority and is what is going to give you the most joy and fulfilment in life.
