If I had asked you, as a kid, the kind of person you wanted to become, what would your answer have been ?

What’s great about kids, is that they often have no limitations whatsover. They all have open minds, and pure hearts. One could criticize that, but I personally see it as gift.

Why ? Because kids are open to change, willing to believe in whatever they have to believe in order to become the person they want to be. If a child wants to become the president, he will strongly believe he can and will be. He doesn’t question himself whether it’s realistic or not.

When I was a kid, I wanted to become Spider-Man, or so I heard. It even seems that I would sleep in my Spidey-suit…

At that time, I had no limitations. I wasn’t thinking about how unrealistic it was to swing through the city shooting webs. No, it was possible, for me. In a sense, we could say that Spider-Man was my mentor, he was the one I used to look up to. I would feel empowered just by thinking about him.

The Power Of Modeling

Unfortunaly, as children become adults, they lose that gift which was so powerful : that of believing. And so, this is how they end up following the same path as everyone else : the path that is proven to work by society. In that society, successful people are not looked up to as kids tend to do, which means as people we can learn from, no. They are either seen as an incredible person who’s totally different from everyone else and who’s gifted, or they’re despised for being different.

I want to make something very clear today : they are not that different. They’re human beings after all.

Obviously, they’re doing something different than everybody else, otherwise everyone would be at least as successful as them.

However, they all have – without exception – the same attributes that all human beings have in common : they need to eat, drink and sleep to survive. Apart from that, they aren’t aliens. Nothing else is different from a biological point of view. They do not have superpowers, they can’t run faster than the speed of light nor can they breathe underwater.

It would be easy to see Michael Jordan as a talented sportsman, but what most people don’t see is the thousands of hours he practiced, or the energy he put into improving his skills even for just 1%.

So, what is the fastest way to become the person you’ve always dreamt of being ?

It’s modeling.

What better way could there be to become like the person you look up to, other than to imitate them ?

I’m not saying that you should change your personality and become a different person no. I’m saying that you should model what makes them different from the rest.

Successful people aren’t lucky. Their ability to be the best at what they do didn’t fall into their laps.

They had a certain mindset, a certain way of being, of living. That’s what makes them successful, and this is what modeling is all about.

Ultimately, here’s what it means : if you want to be like everybody else, then model everybody else.

If you don’t want to be like everybody, then don’t imitate them; do the opposite.

It’s as simple as that.

First, we must look at how ‘everybody else’ behaves. Before I go into that, I want to make it clear that the best thing you could do to get the same result as the person you look up to, is to actually analyze them. Read their biographies, follow their journey, analyze what they do on a daily basis.

This is not magic, it’s just observation.

What I’ve learned so far in my journey of becoming a happy, successful person (not just happy, not just successful, but both!) are the following :

  • Successful people work harder than everybody else

  • Successful people work smarter than everybody else

  • While everybody else complain, successful people find a solution

  • While everybody else is watching TV, successful people are improving themselves

  • Successful people do not let past mistakes hinder their progression, instead, they use it to become better

  • Successful people spend 10% of their time on the problem, and 90% of their time on the solution.

  • Successful people live in abundance, while everybody else live in scarcity

  • Successful people are successful at everything they do, not because they’re lucky or gifted, but because they have the proper mindset.

  • Successful people use Facebook not for the sake of it, but for growing their business.

  • Successful people never quit, unless it’s justified.

  • Successful people never make excuses.

  • Successful people understand that anything of value is expensive (in money, time or effort)

  • Successful people enjoy themselves strategically

  • Successful people are focused and committed on whatever they’re doing

  • Successful people know that success doesn’t happen overnight.

  • Successful people are proactive, not reactive

And more. These are the primary ones off the top of my head, but I know there are way more differences than that. I’ll surely write an article about this because it’s a really important aspect of becoming successful.

Above is what I could write about the differences between successful and unsuccessful people in just a few minutes. This shows how dedicated I am to studying this subject, which is why I want you to do the same.

Unless you understand how successful people are, you can’t become one of them.

Successful people represent 1% of the population, so unless you’re very lucky and get to live around successful people, chances are you’re like me and you’ll need to study this subject like you would study for an exam.

As I said, I don’t want you to just look at the facts. For instance, ”’this person wakes up at 5 am, and does this this and this”. What you want to do is to understand the principles, or the philosophy first.

Let’s illustrate this with an example, say ‘how to make your first million dollars’.

Learning a tactic would be to learn the ‘how-to’s, meaning that you would maybe learn something like : ”Make YouTube videos everyday, comment on the videos of the most famous YouTubers out there, and then sell something to your subscribers.”

This is great. You may apply this and make your first million dollars. But let’s say one day YouTube shuts down your account, or the rules change and this technique doesn’t work anymore, what are you going to do ?

That’s why it’s not sustainable long-term.

Instead, learning the principles would be a better idea. Principles or philosophies are universal and can be applied everywhere, for instance : ”Create content everyday, make sure people know your name and then you can start making money.”

This work just the same way. Instead of learning what successful people do, which is good but only surface level, learn what their beliefs are, learn why they do it, how they see themselves. This will give you a deeper understanding of how they managed to become successful.

Remember this : they got their results because they think a certain way. Their thougts led them to act. If you can think the same way, you’ll behave the same way and so you’ll have the same results.

It’s as simple as that, and this is how ALL the successful people that I know became successful : by having the same mindset as top-performers. Your mindset dictates your acts. If you think like most people, then you’ll get the same result as them. If you think like successful people, then you’ll get the same result as well.

This is why changing the mindset is the most important thing to do first: it tells you what to do without you having to consciouly do stuff that you normally wouldn’t do.

In short, if you change your mindset, you’ll change your actions which will change your results! It’s precisely for this reason that I love to study successful entrepreneurs: they already have what I want, so I just need to take their beliefs to get to where I want to be.
