Your morning ritual is the one thing that can determine the quality of your day, and as time goes by, is going to determine the quality of your entire life as well. 

A good morning ritual does not only have the power to change your life by making you happier, more productive and more confident, but it also is the surest way to achieve your goals and finally get your hands on what you’ve always longed for.

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you do have a routine that you’ve been conditioning for years and that is influencing you on a daily-basis. 

Unfortunately, for most people the truth is that their morning ritual disempower them: they start off the day by being reactive and by trying to please everybody, except themselves.

In this article, we’ll talk about the power of morning rituals and how it can change your life for the better. It would be no exaggeration to say that morning rituals changed my life in many ways by increasing my productivity, motivation, happiness and levels of energy.

I’ve been doing some tests regarding how to start my morning in the best way possible over the past few years, and I can assuredly say that having a morning ritual that I proactively designed considerably improved every area of my life.

What Is A Morning Ritual?

A morning ritual – or morning routine – is a set of empowering or disempowering actions that one takes in the morning. In other words, it is what you do between the moment you wake up, and the moment your day starts.

In the case of many people, a morning ritual consists of getting up, drinking a cup of coffee/checking their emails and going to work. This kind of morning ritual is not empowering in the sense that it does not get you ready for the day: you are in a reactive state and are vulnerable to everybody else.

This often leads to getting easily irritated, angry, and then finally lashing out at somebody. As you can imagine, it shouldn’t be our standard as it often gets in the way of daily joy and happiness.

Thus, the purpose of a morning ritual is to take care of yourself first thing in the morning in order to be able to effectively deal with other people’s demands.

Why Is Having A Morning Ritual A Must?

It can be difficult to take on the day after sleeping 8 hours: your body has naturally been used to being in ‘rest mode’ for so long that it’s not thinking about achieving more success in your life anymore. All its focus is on staying comfortable in that cosy bed of yours.

A morning ritual is the perfect time to get back into that state of power! Instead of starting off the day in that unresourceful and disempowering state.. why wouldn’t you put yourself in a great state first?

Even the most successful people on the planet have their own morning rituals: surely, they must know one thing or two about success!

For instance, former president Barack Obama would wake up 2 hours before his first scheduled appointment to take care of himself first: it meant exercising, reading and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

World’s greatest performance coach and billionaire Tony Robbins starts his day in the most radical way: he plunges into a cold pool to wake his body up! Then, he goes on with breathing exercises to feel good about himself and practice gratitude, prayer, and exercise.

How Long Should A Morning Ritual Be?

The answer varies from person to person. Firstly, it depends on how much time you have. Some people might have more time than others. Don’t be under the impression that you need 2 hours like Barack Obama or Tony Robbins to create a morning ritual, even 5 minutes will do. If you don’t have even 5 minutes for you, you don’t have a life.

Secondly, it depends on how long it needs to be for it to have an effect on you. 5 minutes might be enough, or too short. I suggest that you try different things, of different lengths and adjust as you go.

Of course, the longer your morning ritual is, the better. If you find out that you need plenty of time to get considerable and measurable results, then you should wake up earlier. Remember that we always have time for whatever we’re committed to.

Condition Your Morning Ritual

Needless to say, doing it once or twice is not enough. You must integrate your morning ritual into your life and make it a part of who you are. It must form a positive addiction of which you can’t stop thinking about.

You might decide to add some rituals into your morning routine that are supposed to change your state – such as being grateful, but that don’t seem to be beneficial to you in any way. This scenario will probably arise more than once, depending on how you’ve been living your life. 

The reason why it might seem to be unsuccessful is because you’ve been conditioning your brain to act and think in a certain way. You can’t expect it to suddenly open up and be vulnerable, it needs practice and dedication.

If such a challenge should arise, keep at it. 

What Morning Rituals Should You Incorporate?

In this section, we’ll explore some powerful morning rituals that you can add to make your mornings a period you’ll look forward to.

When it comes to morning rituals, there are 3 types of rituals that can benefit you: morning rituals for your body, mind and spirit.

Obviously, you need to cultivate all three of them: there’s no point in having a strong body if you’re mentally weak, just like it’s not enough to be strong both physically and mentally: you need a deeper understanding of yourself and some connections with your creator which a morning ritual on spirit can give you.

The spirit part may make you cringe a little bit depending on your beliefs and experiences, but don’t close yourself off and be open-minded: you don’t necessarily have to believe in God. You can replace it with whatever you want to call it: a higher form of existence, The Universe, etc..

1 – Drink water 

70% of our bodies are comprised of water, which makes it a necessity for us to drink more. After sleeping 6-8 hours, your body becomes dehydrated and is craving for water. Give it what it needs and see how your health improves. Numerous studies report that drinking water have the following benefits: boost your metabolism, help your body flush out toxins, healthier skin and so on.

Seen in this light, you should understand that depriving your body of water doesn’t do any good.

2 – Take a cold shower

Taking a cold shower first thing in the morning can have wonderful benefits. Not only is it a powerful and efficient way to wake you up – which may be helpful if you had poor sleep the previous night -, but more importantly, it builds your mental strength and willpower.

If you ever took a cold shower, you must know that it can be quite difficult. It’s a great way to kickstart the day with the thought that your mind and body can deal with any challenges that will arise.

Apart from that, cold showers have a lot of health benefits as well: stronger immune system, reduced pain, reduced stress levels..

3 – Wash your face

A common daily routine that not only allows you to take care of yourself, but also to wake yourself up which can be useful especially have a poor night’s sleep.

4 – Stretch

Stretching can be a great way to wake your body up and get it ready for the day ahead.

It provides an array of benefits: increased flexibility, increased blood flow, heal and prevent back pain…

5 – Exercise

The benefits of working out aren’t lacking. What’s more, we all know intellectually that exercising is good for the body, but how many of us actually do it?

Countless studies have been conducted on the subject, and many benefits have been revelead: first, it can make you feel happier by improving your mood and decreasing anxiety and stress. Not only that, exercising also have the power to increase your energy levels, reduce your risk of chronic diseases, improve brain functions, improve sleep quality..

In other words, exercising can improve the quality of your life.

6 – Go for a walk

Closely tied to exercising, going for a walk has numerous benefits as well, not only for the body but for the mind as well.

When it comes to benefits for the body, walking can help you burn calories to maintain or lose weight, strengthen your heart, ease joint pain, improve your mood.. many of which are similar to exercising.

7 – Yoga

Just like exercising, yoga can provide a lot for you. If you’re looking for relieving stress, reduce inflammation or even fight depression as some studies reports.. then yoga is for you.

8 – Smile

What better way to start the day could there be than to smile first thing in the morning? It sets the tone for the day and sets you up for a beautiful and enriching day. 

For some people, smiling after waking up might be challenging but as long as you keep practicing, it shouldn’t be a problem. 

Smiling throughout the day is very important too: it conditions your mind and body to live a happy life.

9 – Laugh

Surprisingly, the body can’t tell the difference between a genuine laugh and a fake laugh. Therefore, you don’t need to wait until you feel like laughing to feel good: you can fake it until it becomes natural to you!

10 – Deep Breathing

Human beings breathes from 20,000 to 30,000 times a day! It goes to show that mastering it can literally change your life!

Studies have shown that deep breathing have the power to calm your nervous system and release muscle tension. 

The body and the mind are intrinsically related: they both always have influence over each other. As such, shallow breathing – which has become the norm for many people – triggers negative emotions such as fear and anxiety. On the other hand, deep breathing allow you to stay calm and focused.

11 – Rebounding

Rebouding on a trampoline causes all the cells in your body to flex and as a result, strengthen them. Once again, it has many health benefits that includes preventing diseases such as cancer, increased bone mass, increased lymphatic flow…

12 – Dance

Dancing is the best way to trigger positive emotions while enjoying yourself. Anybody can do it and it requires no knowledge whatsoever – all you need to do is to put on some music and move your body!

Starting your day this way tells your subconscious mind that you’re ready to tackle any challenges that may arise with positivity.

13 – Affirmations

No matter what you say to yourself, your subconscious mind will believe and register it as the truth. For this reason, you must pay great attention to your inner thoughts and more importantly, override any negative and disempowering thought or belief that might cause challenges in your life.

The best way to do this is through affirmations. Not only can it delete any disempowering data your brain-computer stores, it can also take in new, fresh and empowering ideas.

If you want to go one step further and maximize the effects of affirmations, engage your body at the same time. Repeating ‘’I’m happy, I’m happy, I’m happy..’’ Is one thing, but saying it with passion, in a loud voice, smiling, as if you really were happy is another.

Here are some of my favorite affirmations that I got from my mentor Stefan James:

  • All I need is within me now
  • Life doesn’t happen to me, it happens for me
  • Everything happens for a reason and a purpose and it serves me
  • I control how I feel – I can change my state in an instant
  • Every day in every way, I’m getting better and better
  • I contribute and add value to the world everyday
  • I accomplish anything I put my mind to
  • If I’m committed, there is always a way
  • Today is a winning day for me

Of course, the best affirmations would be those that empower a thought or habit that you want to have more in your life. In other words, it depends on you.

14 – Ask empowering questions

Your brain will always try to find answers ; it hates what it can’t understand. Thus, it’s a good opportunity to ask yourself questions that elicit positive answers, such as:

  • What am I grateful for?
  • What do I love most about my life?
  • How can I make my life even better?
  • Why is my life amazing?

15 – Watch inspiring videos

Watching inspiring videos is a great way to kickstart the day as well. It can considerably boost your motivation and productivity throughout the day.

16 – Visualization

Research have shown that your brain can’t tell the difference between reality and something that you vividly imagine. Do you see how life-changing this discovery can be?

Visualizing your upcoming successes can lead to a variety of changes in your behavior and identity: more confidence, happier, overcoming a fear.. The possibilities are limitless.

17 – Listen to music

Music is a very powerful too as it can elicit various emotions which you get to choose – pick your favorite songs which reflects the state you want to be in and enjoy.

18 – Journal

Writing down your feelings, progress and thoughts can work too. 

19 – Read a book

Every successful people have read lots of books at one point in their lives. It’s no coincidence: books are the perfect tool to accumulate knowledge and apply it to the outside world to produce massive changes.

20 – Plan your day

If you have goals and plan to achieve massive success in your life, you’d better plan your days!

Planning your day allows you to spend your time proactively, instead of being caught up in what arises during the day. It also improves your motivation by reminding you of your goals. I’m particularly fond of Tony Robbin’s RPM method.

First, right the result – your goal. Then, write your purpose – why do you want to achieve this goal. Finally, write your MAP – Massive Action Plan. These are all the things you could to today to reach this goal. I recommend to narrow it down to 1 or 2 things – the most important things.

21 – Go for a walk

Once again, walking is not only beneficial for the body but the mind as well: studies have shown that it can help reduce anxiety, depression and a negative mood. It also reduces stress and improves memory.

22 – Read good news

Reading the newspaper first thing in the morning is the worst thing you could ever do – why would you feed your mind with negativity when your mind is at the most influenceable stage of the day – the morning?

Instead, proactively feed it with good news. It means no watching the news on TV or listening to the radio.. but looking for positive news on the internet. You have no control over what the news decide to show you, but you do have control over what you research online.

23 – Use your imagination

Some people decide to use their energy to focus on what they should have done in the past.

This is the surest way to be miserable. Instead, be the master of your mind and control it. Remembering past experiences that made you feel good will make you feel good again.

24 – Cold shower

Cold shower can also be a useful habit to have for the mind if you decide to build inner strength.

25 – Be grateful

Entering a state of gratitude is the easiest and fastest way to feel good. Contrary to what a lot of people think, you don’t need to ‘have it all’ to be grateful. In fact, you can be grateful for things that most people never pay attention to – such as their health or the fact that they’re still alive.

26 – Meditate

In today’s world where everything requires our constant attention, we need to schedule in some time to recharge and reconnect with ourselves.

Meditation doesn’t have to be hard, long and boring ; you can meditate for as low as 5 minutes and still get tremendous benefits.

27 – Contribute

Most people have a scarcity mentality and are reluctant to give. It doesn’t have to be that way.

What’s more, you don’t even need to give money. Giving some of your time away might be a solution too, or even a smile to someone who desperately needs it. Any form of contribution is beneficial.

28 – Pray

Praying is an excellent way to get out of your head and connect spiritually to a higher presence, just like gratitude. 

29 – Celebrate your life

We get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to reward ourselves for everything that we’ve successfully achieved so far. You don’t need to wait until you’ll achieve your goal of making a million dollars – you can start right now by acknowledging the fact that you’ve made some progress towards your goal.

30 – Send positive thoughts

Just sending love to somebody else for no reason is a great way to connect with your soul on a deeper level. On a soul-level, it’s not about getting, it’s about giving.

31 – Communicate with your creator

Sometimes, the simplest things are the most powerful. Send positive energy and positive words to your creator. 

32 – Connect with your partner on a deeper level

Looking at your partner in the eyes for a long period of time is a powerful way to connect with them on a soul-level. Take the time to appreciate the beauty of their soul.

33 – Remind Yourself Of Your Purpose/Mission

Remind yourself of the purpose of your life. It gives you direction but also meaning in life.

34 – Play with your pet

Animals have souls too. Spending some time with them having fun is a great way to connect with them as well.

35 – Communicate with plants

As a matter of fact, any living thing have a soul. Talking to plants have been shown to accelerate their growth.

Now, you don’t have to go as far as literally talking to them.. but take some time to feel their energy.

36 – Go out in nature

Nature is where we all come from, it is our natural home. Going out in nature can help you connect on a deeper level with life.
