If you were to tell me that you have no limiting belief, that would be just one right there! But you’re not that kind of person, are you?

In this article, I’ll share with you 17 limiting beliefs examples that are preventing you from succeeding in life, as well as the best tools to turn this limiting beliefs into empowering beliefs.

What Is A Limiting Belief?

Our brains are designed to keep us safe, and as such, will only find points to nitpick instead of just going for it.

It doesn’t mean that your brain is always wrong ; after all, you’d better thank it for preventing you from jumping out of the window! However, your brain most of the time is wrong.

One of the most commonly shared source of anxiety in the entire world is the fear of approaching the opposite sex, as if it was a dangerous act in itself (which isn’t). Your brain then tries to make up all kinds of excuses to prevent you from doing it – just like it would prevent you from jumping off a building.

Limiting beliefs are an integral part of human beings: whenever old doubts gets cleared, new ones arise. The only difference between people who live an extraordinary life and others is that the former have awareness of their limiting beliefs and possess the tools to get rid of it before it grows.

A limiting belief is just the foretaste of what’s to come: when nurtured enough, it will become a conviction and it’s the most dangerous stage you don’t want any kind of thought to enter.

Some Examples Of Limiting Beliefs

1) ”I’m the victim!”

Most people tend to position themselves as the victim when something they don’t like occur. They don’t want to admit that they are in charge of what happened, as it will make them feel uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, by throwing away their responsibility in what happened, they are also throwing away their ability to change it. In the end, they never learn and keep repeating the same mistakes.

2) ”I’m not good enough.”

By underestimating yourself, you also give up on all your goals and dreams. After all, if you believe that you’re not enough to follow through on your goals, there’s no way you’re going to be able to achieve them.

3- ”I can’t do it”

The only reason why you won’t be able to achieve your goals is because you’ve lost faith in your ability to succeed. This belief will never do you any good. In fact, why would you even take action if you ”believe” that all your efforts will be in vain?

What you believe in becomes true for you: if you believe that you can’t do it, then surely you couldn’t.

4- ”I’m not smart enough”

The ones who succeed are generally not the smartest but the ones who take action and believe in themselves. Intelligence has little to nothing to do with it. I’ve seen many people, not necessarily stupid, but not smart either succeed.

5- ”I’m too young/too old”

There is no right age to do something. You either are “too young”, or “too old”. Furthermore, people younger and older than you already probably have achieved the results you want, so why not you?

6 – ”I’m not ready yet”

If you’re waiting to be ready before you start something, then chances are you’ll never start, because you’ll never be entirely ready. While you prepare, millions of people in the world are taking action and are trying to get the results you want.

7 – ”Money Is The Root Of All Evil”

People that have negative associations with money tend to be the people with the least amount of it.

It’s not a coincidence: this belief dictates your finances. After all, how can you expect to make millions if your subconscious views money as a bad thing? No one wants to be a bad person, so your brain will make sure (on a subconscious level) that you’ll earn the bare minimum.

What’s more, money is not bad at all. In fact, I believe it’s a tool. Just like a knife which you can use to cook, your can also use it to kill. Does that mean the knife is bad? No. It’s the person that used it this way who is. As a matter of fact, money is just an amplifier of you who are: if you’re a bad person, you’ll use money to do bad things. If you’re a good person, you’ll do good things with it.

Money can help, save and inspire people.

8 – I don’t have enough time

We all have 24 hours in a day, no matter who we’re talking about. All the money Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Mark Zuckerberg and other rich people have doesn’t magically create more hours.

In fact, these people are busier than you and I. Even so, they find the time. ”I don’t have enough time” is a common excuse that we’ve all heard, and probably even said. However, we make the time for whatever we’re commited to.

If I put a gun to your head and force you to go to the gym every single day, would you find the time? You bet you will! It’s just about prioritization.

9- Only Rich People Can [Verb]

Of course, some people have some advantages over you. However, does that mean that without these advantages you can’t succeed? Of course not! In fact, I’m positive that people that were living your life before are now living the life you’re dreaming of. For more inspiration, you can even look for these people to hearh their story.

10- I’m Unlucky

There are so many people who went through worse than you and I and nonetheless achieved their dreams that you can’t let that belief control your life. If everything revolved around luck, most successful people would be incompetent, which is far from being true.

11- I don’t have the money

It’s a common limiting belief: one I used to have as well. Once again, If I were to put a gun to your head, you would find the money, no matter what you would have to do in order to obtain it. The problem, then becomes: ”I don’t want to spend money on this.”, which is a value issue and probably stems from another limiting belief (it won’t work on me, for example.)

12 – If I Succeed, People Will Hate Me

Indeed, people will hate you, just like some people are hating you right now. People don’t need external reasons to hate you, as it’s all about themselves. No one is waiting you to make more money to finally dislike you, they just dislike you the moment they see you. It’s not about you, it’s about them.

”To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.”

13 – I’m a failure

Most people let their past dictate their future. However, the past does not equal the future. Just because you’ve failed in the past does not mean that you’ll keep failing in the future.

In fact, failing is normal. I would even go as far as to say that not failing would be abnormal. Ask any successful person in the world and they will always tell you that they failed time and time again in order to get to where they are today.

14 – One Day, I’ll Do It

What this means is that you don’t have confidence in your ability to do it, but your conceal it through this affirmation. One day usually means ”never”. No matter what you’re planning on doing ‘on day’, you won’t. It’s just an illusion created by your brain trying to comfort you that your current life is enough and that ‘one day, you’ll have more’ in an attempt to keep you in your comfort zone.

15 – This Is The Way It’s Supposed To Be

If you’re stuck in life and believe that things are the way they are, guess what: you’ll stay stuck your entire life. There are people with unusual diseases fighting and overcoming them every single day.

16 – People Don’t Change

This limiting belief not only gives you an inaccurate, negative perception of the world, but it also conditions your mind to think that you are what you are and can’t change. If you can’t change, then how are you going to achieve your goals? If what you are today was enough to achive your goals, you would already have achived them by now.

17- Life Is Hard

The truth is, most people are making it way more complex than it really is. By believing that life is hard, you’re telling your subconscious that life also MUST be hard, otherwise something’s wrong with you.

Guess what happens then ? Your mind will do anything it can to make your life harder.

3 Step-Process To Get Rid Of A Limiting Belief

1 – Identify It

The first step towards making any kind of lasting change in life is to identify and develop self-awareness around a particular problem in your life. In short, if you don’t believe there’s a problem, then you won’t take action, let alone make any decision to change it.

The identification process is quite simple: just ask yourself WHY you think you can’t do something. Your brain will do the rest by coming up with all kinds of excuses. No matter who you are and where you come from, I can assure you that you have limiting beliefs.

Once you’ve identified it, you can change it!

2 – Change It

To get rid of a limiting belief, all you have to do is to replace it by an empowering one that serves you. Your job is to find reasons why your limiting belief is wrong. You can use the sentences I’ve written under each limiting beliefs above to help you in the process, but you must write things you are willing to believe.

For instance, if you believe that ”you can’t do it because you’re too young”, you could just tell yourself that someone of your age somehere in the world managed to get the results you want. If you want to take this a step further, you can even go as far as to find a role model who is a living proof that it’s true.

Once your computer-brain downloaded the good files, you need to upload them.

3 – Live It

In this last step, your job is to condition this new belief by doing two things: taking massive action, and using affirmations. You can’t erase a belief that’s been lurking in the shadows for a while in just 5 minutes: you need days, weeks or even months in some cases to replace the corrupted files.

Start feeding your mind with information that will slowly build up your confidence that this belief is the real deal. One of my favorite ways to do this is through affirmations! The process is simple: keep repeating every single day with energy in front of the mirror the new belief you would like to upload into your brain. As time goes by, it’ll become natural for you and you will have totally override your old beliefs.
